Description of PVC pipe

PVC pipe are generally divided into 4 types: PVC-U (unplasticized PVC), C-PVC (chlorinated PVC), PVC-O (molecularly oriented PVC) and Modified PVC (PVC-M, PVC-HI). Besides having many of the same properties, each type of PVC has its advantages for different applications.

PVC-U: Unplasticized Polyvinyl Chloride.

PVC-O: Bidirectionally oriented polyvinyl chloride with higher long-term strength.

PVC-C: chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, higher temperature for long-term use.

PVC-UH: Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride material for injection-molded parts with a proven MRS value of at least 25 Mpa.

PVC-Hi or PVC-M: Modified polyvinyl chloride for higher impact resistance and lower low temperature brittleness.

Each type of PVC (PVC-U、C-PVC、PVC-O PVC-M) has its own advantages for different applications.

  • 1. PVC-U: PVC-U stands for unplasticized PVC, which means that no plasticizers are added to the PVC compound. Unplasticized PVC is also known as rigid PVC. PVC-U is the most common type of PVC for pipes and fittings, including drinking water, sewage and underground drainage, and industrial applications.
  • 2. C-PVC: C-PVC stands for chlorinated PVC. Pipes and fittings made of C-PVC offer many of the advantages of PVC-U. Both are safe for use with potable water and feature high corrosion resistance, high durability and excellent impact resistance. However, pipes and fittings made of C-PVC can withstand a wider range of temperatures due to the higher chlorine content than regular PVC-U. This makes C-PVC a popular choice for plumbing systems in residential and commercial buildings. The ductility of C-PVC is also significantly higher than that of PVC-U.
  • 3. PVC-O: Molecularly oriented PVC (PVC-O) is the result of a production process that transforms the amorphous structure of unplasticized PVC (PVC-U) into a layered structure. PVC-O enhances many of the benefits of PVC-U, such as corrosion resistance, water quality preservation, cost-effectiveness and recyclability, and an unparalleled balance of strength, stiffness and flexibility. Pipes made of PVC-O are particularly advantageous in terms of hydraulic capacity, ductility, crack propagation, and impact and fatigue resistance. This means that PVC-O is an excellent choice for drinking water pressure piping. PVC-O is also ideal for buried non-potable water applications such as irrigation and sewer pumping mains.
  • 4. Modified PVC (PVC-M, PVC-HI, PVC-A): This series is a thermoplastic alloy formed by adding compatible modifiers to PVC. Modifiers improve toughness, impact properties, and crack growth resistance, thereby increasing the fracture toughness and ductility of the material. This enhanced toughness enables modified PVC pipes to create thinner walls, saving material and improving hydraulic performance. Alloying of PVC with modified polymers improves cracking resistance. The result is that the effects of stress concentration factors such as scratches are minimized.
